In little under 2-months the events landscape has suffered irreparable damage due to the trail of destruction left behind by COVID-19. The general consensus within the industry is that events may never be the same again.
The future looked bright until that fateful day in March
It’s crazy to think that back in February when GES (the company I work for) exhibited at International Confex we were living in what seems a different universe. The global exhibition industry had a positive outlook with forecasted growth throughout 2020. GES had an unprecedented year of show and awards wins in 2019. We were riding that wave going into 2020. The future looked very bright for GES and many other industry suppliers.
Just 7-weeks ago I was at ExCeL London exhibiting on the show floor with GES. Now that same floor hosts hundreds of hospital beds/bays that GES helped install for NHS Nightingale. It’s all very surreal to say the least.
Leading the charge with GES at International Confex 2020
Back to a time when things were more familiar. In February I was lucky enough to lead GES’ marketing campaign, exhibit/activation design and show floor strategy at International Confex 2020. In a design capacity I was very hands on from start to finish. I created the bar concept/activation, campaign deliverables and exhibitor graphics.
For those of you that don’t know what Confex is, it’s the UK’s leading exhibition for event organisers. The show is a platform to help support, inspire and drive growth within the events industry. The event was attended by over 300 market leading exhibitors, over 100 thought-leadership speakers and over 7,000 event professionals.
The theme for our presence was devised around the concept of how we tailor make events/exhibits for our corporate clients. As a result, I created GES Tailor Street which was the Official International Confex networking bar at the show.
The pièce de résistance
I loved designing this project and my favourite element was the measuring tape hanging banner. I’m very lucky to work with some fantastic project managers as this wouldn’t have been possible without them. I came up with the idea, provided my project manager with the artwork. He figured out how to do it and sourced a supplier in next to no time. On the show floor it provided a high-level branding opportunity that stood apart from the rest. It really was well received.
If you were not lucky enough to be at the show watch the video below to see what you missed. Hopefully it’s a little bit of light relief in these ‘testing’ times. A glimpse of how fun and exciting our industry was and can be again. We will get to the other side and I only think it will reinforce the desire for face-to-face events. Especially, after what may be months of isolation.
